Term 2 Issue 1 Principals Message

Welcome Back to term 2, it’s great to see our students returning with enthusiasm and passion for learning.

What a fantastic start to the term it’s been at Mirniyan Primary School! Our students have settled in beautifully, reconnecting with friends and jumping straight into engaging learning experiences.

Highlights from the first few days have included:

  •  Baking Anzac biscuits, linking learning with important moments in Australian history.
  • Senior School Sport.

Nature Play at Mirniyan – A Space for Imagination, Exploration and Growth

Our new Nature Play area has been a huge hit with the students! Since its opening, we’ve seen children fully immersed in imaginative play, creative problem-solving, and joyful collaboration. It has quickly become a favourite space in the school grounds.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to Hutchinson Builders for their generous donation and support in constructing this beautiful outdoor space. Their contribution has made a significant impact on our school environment, and we are incredibly grateful for their partnership in helping us enrich our students' learning experiences.

Nature play encourages children to explore, take risks, and develop resilience in a natural environment. Whether it’s balancing on logs, building with rocks, or creating imaginative games with natural materials, students are actively developing important physical, social, and cognitive skills.

Research shows that nature-based play supports:

  • Improved focus and attention, especially in classroom learning
  • Stronger motor skills and coordination
  • Greater creativity and curiosity
  • Enhanced wellbeing, with lower stress and increased happiness
  • Collaboration and teamwork through open-ended, cooperative play

At Mirniyan Primary School, we believe in creating learning environments that nurture the whole child. Our Nature Play area reflects this commitment by offering a space that promotes connection—to each other, to learning, and to the natural world.

We love seeing our students engage with the outdoors in such meaningful ways, and we look forward to expanding on these opportunities in the future.

What a fantastic start to the term it’s been at Mirniyan Primary School! Our students have settled in beautifully, reconnecting with friends and jumping straight into engaging learning experiences.

I would like to acknowledge the hard work and dedication shown by our students, staff, and families over the past weeks. It's been a busy and productive start to the first term 2 of Mirniyan Primary School, with plenty of learning, growth, and positive momentum. Thank you for your continued support—we look forward to an equally successful second half of the term.

Kind Regards

2026 Prep Transition and Enrolment

We are excited to announce that our 2026 Prep Transition and Enrolment process is now underway! One of the highlights of this time is welcoming new families on school tours. It’s a true joy to share all the wonderful things happening at Mirniyan Primary School—from the vibrant learning in our classrooms to the rich and diverse experiences offered through our specialist programs.

Our dedicated and highly skilled staff work in professional learning teams and use evidence-based research to design high-quality teaching and learning programs. Seeing this in action alongside prospective families during tours has been a privilege and a proud moment for our school community.

School tour dates for prospective Prep families are as follows:

  • Wednesday 21st May

We also invite all current and prospective families of 2026 Prep students to attend our Prep Information Evening on Wednesday 25th June, from 6:00–7:00pm. This is a great opportunity to meet our staff, learn about the transition process, and find out what makes Mirniyan Primary such a special place to begin your child’s school journey.

Uniform update

Uniform Update – Winter Additions & Fantastic Community Support

We’re excited to share that our school uniform range now includes hats and beanies to keep students warm and comfortable during the colder months. These new additions have been a welcome addition to our winter uniform options!

According to the latest update from PSW, our uniform supplier:

  • A total of 1,707 uniform items have been sold since the launch
  • Thanks to strong demand and the School Saver Bonus, there are currently no outstanding parent back orders
  • The new uniform has been flying off the shelves—and our students are looking fantastic in it!

We thank our families for your continued support and enthusiasm. It’s been wonderful to see students wearing their uniform with pride and embracing our school identity.

Senior Sport

Senior School Sport Update:

Our Grade3-6 students enjoyed teamwork, fitness and fun while participating in four different activities: AFL Footy, Netball, Basketball, and Cricket. Each sport focused on developing fundamental catching and coordination skills. It was fantastic to see the students engaging enthusiastically, learning new techniques, and most importantly, having fun while working together!

Sustainability Superstars!

  •  A Sustainability lesson with our Prep E superstars, who showed great pride in caring for our school environment by cleaning up along the oval fence line

3/4 Science

Life Cycles

In Grade 3/4, students have been learning about life cycles in Science. To demonstrate their understanding, they worked in teams to create life cycle models out of play dough—an activity that sparked creativity, teamwork, and deep thinking.

Enjoy looking at some photos of their amazing creations and inspiring work across the school. It’s been a joyful, productive start—and we can’t wait to see what the rest of the term brings!

1/2 Science

Grade 1/2 completed a fun launch activity on materials. They explored physically changing materials with paper. Their task to explore was: Can you step into a piece of A5 paper?

Student Leadership in Action at Mirniyan

Our student leaders have been busy making a meaningful impact across the school, showing initiative, collaboration, and a deep commitment to improving our community.

The Student Representative Council (SRC) has kicked off the term by exploring an important question: “How can we make the yard a happier place?” This inquiry was sparked by data they collected from students in all classes. Using Kath Murdoch’s Inquiry model, they will spend the term researching, collaborating, fundraising, and ultimately taking action to create a more positive playground environment for everyone.

Meanwhile, our Sustainability Leaders and Room Officers have been hard at work promoting a ‘litter-free’ playground. Their efforts are helping to build a cleaner, greener school environment and encouraging responsible habits across the student body.

On Thursday 27 March, I had the pleasure of attending the City of Casey’s annual Student Leaders Reception at Bunjil Place Theatre alongside Anne McDonald, our school captains Neethushree and Sam, and SRC representatives Jackson and Aladdin.

This special event recognised the contributions of young leaders across the City of Casey and provided a valuable opportunity for our students to connect with peers from other schools and reflect on their roles as emerging leaders.

We were especially fortunate to hear from Alice Pung OAM, a celebrated Australian author and lawyer whose novels Unpolished Gem and Her Father’s Daughter are studied in schools around the world. Ms. Pung, a passionate advocate for social justice and education, spoke powerfully about leadership, resilience, and making a difference.

Our student leaders came away with powerful messages about leading with confidence, compassion, and purpose—and the importance of asking, “How can I make a positive impact for others?”

As part of their leadership responsibilities, our School Leaders, Naksh and Neethushree, represented Mirniyan Primary School with pride and respect at the ANZAC Day Memorial Service held at the Cranbourne Cenotaph. They participated in the ceremony and laid a wreath on behalf of our school community to honour those who have served and sacrificed for our country.

Their presence and conduct at the event were exemplary, and they demonstrated the values of respect, care, and civic responsibility—key pillars of student leadership at Mirniyan.

Back at school, students engaged in classroom discussions and learning experiences to deepen their understanding of the significance of ANZAC Day. These sessions helped students reflect on the historical and cultural importance of the day, while also appreciating the freedoms we enjoy today as a result of the courage and sacrifice of past generations.

Recognising ANZAC Day in this way helps to instil a sense of gratitude, community awareness, and national identity in our students, all of which are essential qualities of active, informed citizenship.

We are incredibly proud of all our student leaders and the way they are living our school values through their actions every day.

Community Update: KOSS

KOSS – Kindergarten Coming to Mirniyan!

We’re excited to share that the Victorian School Building Authority (VSBA) is currently in the planning and development phase of building a Kindergarten on the Mirniyan Primary School site as part of the Kindergartens on School Sites (KOSS) initiative.

This new facility will offer local families a high-quality early learning experience, right here on our school grounds. Once complete, the kindergarten will be managed by an appointed service provider, selected by the VSBA.

While the provider has not yet been appointed, families interested in future enrolment are encouraged to subscribe for email updates via the VSBA project page:

A message to our school community from the principal of Clyde Creek North Secondary College:

Dear Parents/Carers and Students,

I would like to introduce myself, Nick Hamer-Smith, as the new Principal at Clyde Creek North Secondary School (interim name).

I have been a Principal and Assistant Principal for almost ten years and in several leadership positions at secondary schools around Melbourne for over 20 years.

At Clyde Creek North Secondary School (interim name), our vision is built on three powerful principles:

BELONG: We create an inclusive, supportive community where every student feels valued, connected, and has a genuine sense of belonging.

BELIEVE: We foster self-confidence and resilience, empowering students to believe in themselves and their ability to achieve their goals.

BECOME: We guide students on their journey to become the best versions of themselves—as learners, citizens, and future leaders.

Our approach combines academic excellence with character development, creative exploration, and real-world problem-solving to support students through their secondary education journey. We are committed to cultivating curious minds, compassionate hearts, and confident leaders.

At the moment, I am working on policy and planning and I have begun the process of employing staff: a Business Manager and Assistant Principal. The builders are very busy with work at the school site, which you can see if you drive past the site at 440 Heather Grove (temporary address)

There will be information sessions later this term and early next term to provide more information about the school. I have been visiting the local primary schools to meet the principals, and in Term 3 the Assistant Principal and I will be meeting with Grade 6 teachers to discuss transition.

If you have questions, you would like answered at the information sessions, please send these to: clyde.creek.north.ss@education.vic.gov.au
