A Term Full of Learning, Achievement and Community
It has been another busy and exciting term at Mirniyan Primary School, with our students embracing a wonderful range of learning opportunities, sporting events, performing arts experiences and community activities. There is so much to celebrate across our school community.
School Review and Compliance
This term and next term, Mirniyan Primary School will participate in the Department of Education’s School Review and Compliance assessment process as part of our school review cycle.
The process provides an important opportunity for us to reflect on our current practices, celebrate our areas of strength and identify opportunities for continued improvement. The review considers areas including Minimum Standards compliance, school context, key data and the implementation of policies and procedures. A particular focus will be the implementation of policies and procedures relating to bullying and responding to racism.
AEU Enterprise Bargaining Update
The Australian Education Union has voted in support of the revised Enterprise Bargaining Agreement offer made by the Department of Education on Monday 10 August 2026. This means the Department and the AEU have reached an in-principle agreement. The Department will now facilitate the formal voting process for Victorian Government teaching service employees. Further advice will be communicated as it becomes available.
What a Wonderful Term!
There is so much happening across Mirniyan Primary School, and it is wonderful to see our students embracing our values of Respect, Care and Growth and the opportunities to Dream, Believe, Achieve and Succeed.
Thank you to our students, staff, families and wider community for the enthusiasm, support and care you continue to bring to our school. Together, we are continuing to build a school community where every child feels known, valued, supported and inspired to grow.
Kind Regards
Nicole Walker
Principal
Our Theatre Stars – Wakakirri
What a wonderful experience our Wakakirri performers had!
Our much-anticipated performance took place at the Frankston Arts Centre on Thursday 14 August. We were incredibly proud of the confidence, commitment and enthusiasm our students demonstrated as they took to the professional stage.
For many students, this will be a treasured memory and a highlight of their primary school years.
A very special thank you to our Performing Arts teacher, Mrs Humphrey for the extraordinary time, energy and creativity invested in this experience. From lunchtime rehearsals and choreography to costumes, props and supporting students throughout the performance process, her commitment created an incredible opportunity for our students.
We are extremely proud of our Wakakirri performers!
Our senior students will participate in their swimming program in the last week of term. Swimming is an important part of our Health and Physical Education program, providing students with opportunities to develop water safety awareness, confidence and swimming skills.
Mirniyan student leaders were selected for an exciting community opportunity with the City of Casey. The City of Casey is producing a professional road safety education video and has invited our students to be the stars! Our Student Representative Council members and Grade 5/6 student leaders were extremely enthusiastic about being involved.
Filming took place at the Appenzeller Drive school crossing on Monday 31 August. Families of our student leaders and community also had the opportunity to nominate parents, grandparents and younger siblings who may like to participate. This was a fantastic opportunity for our students to contribute to an important community road safety initiative and see themselves represented in a professional City of Casey resource. Thank you to our students and the Hodges family for their enthusiastic participation and awesome acting performances on the day.
We will finish the term with our Footy Parade on the final day of term. Students will gather in the stadium to celebrate their favourite teams and enjoy some footy-themed fun together. We can't wait to see our students and staff getting into the spirit of the day!
Thank you to Mrs Remnant for organising all these great opportunities for our students to be active and develop their skills.
National Science Week 2026 was celebrated under the theme “Seeds of Science: Nurturing knowledge for all.”
Throughout the week, our science teacher, Mrs Formby opened the Science room during lunchtimes, giving students the opportunity to participate in fun, hands-on science activities. Mrs Formby also hosted a special after-school family science event exploring seeds, growth and new life. It was wonderful to see our students’ natural curiosity and enthusiasm for scientific discovery extending beyond the classroom. It was also great to see our families attend Mirniyan's National Science Week Family Event for an afternoon of discovery, creativity and hands-on science as we celebrated National Science Week 2026!
Inspired by this year's theme, "Seeds of Science – Nurturing Knowledge for All," families were invited to explore, investigate and learn together through a range of fun, interactive activities suitable for all ages. From planting seeds and exploring them under microscopes to creating recycled newspaper pots, browsing our special Book Week science library and much more, there was something for everyone to enjoy. This was a wonderful opportunity for children and adults to experience the excitement of science together, to ask questions, to discover new ideas and to create lasting memories.
We are sure our families enjoyed celebrating curiosity, creativity and the amazing world of science together!
A big thank you to Lisa Formby, our Science & Sustainability Specialist Teacher for all her hard work making National Science Week such an exciting week of learning for our whole school community.
Our First Nations students recently participated in Echoes of Country at Bunjil Place alongside students from other local primary and secondary schools.
The day provided a wonderful opportunity to celebrate, honour and deepen students’ understanding of First Nations cultures. Students participated in a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony, art activities, storytelling and cultural learning experiences. They also planted a native plant to take home and grow in their own garden. It was a meaningful opportunity for our students to connect with culture, community and other young people from across our local network.
The Mirniyan Mic Masters have been back with special Book Week and Science Week episodes!
The Book Week episode was shared in classrooms during snack and lunchtime and included book recommendations, costume ideas and plenty of information to get everyone excited about Book Week. Our science week podcast has just been published. Our student podcasters continue to develop their communication, collaboration and digital media skills while creating authentic content for a real audience. It is wonderful to hear how much our students enjoy knowing that their work is being listened to by students across the school and by families.
A big thank you to everyone who continues to support our Mirniyan Mic Masters and provide students with authentic opportunities to share their voices.
Our Children’s University students are looking forward to their graduation ceremony at Swinburne University’s Hawthorn campus on Thursday 3 December.
Students are thoroughly enjoying the enrichment opportunities available through the program and are continuing to work towards the goals they set for themselves at the beginning of the year. Children’s University encourages students to pursue their interests, develop independence and curiosity, and take ownership of their learning beyond the classroom.
Students can continue building their learning hours through activity booklets, enrichment opportunities such as Day of AI, activities connected to their individual interests and submission of outstanding 10-hour forms. We look forward to celebrating their achievements at the graduation ceremony later this year. They have had their graduation gown fittings ready for the big event!
We had a lovely time at school celebrating Father’s Day at Mirniyan this week with our Father’s Day Stall on Thursday 3 September, followed by our Fathers and Special Others Morning Tea on Friday 4 September, featuring a fun paper-plane competition.
A very big thank you to TheirCare for supporting our Father’s Day breakfast and generously supplying and serving morning tea for our school fathers and special people. These events provide wonderful opportunities for families to connect with our school and celebrate the important people in our students’ lives. It was fantastic to see many fathers and special others at our morning tea and visiting their children in classrooms.
Welcoming Our 2027 Preps
We are very excited to welcome our 2027 Prep students and their families to Mirniyan Primary School.
Prep transition interviews are taking place during Weeks 8 and 9 this term. These interviews provide an important opportunity for teachers to meet children and families, learn more about each child and begin building positive relationships before they commence school. Starting Prep is such an exciting milestone, and we look forward to welcoming our newest students into the Mirniyan community.
During Weeks 6 and 7, we held Student Support Group (SSG) meetings with families and carers. SSGs provide an important opportunity for families, teachers and relevant professionals to work collaboratively, review student progress and identify appropriate adjustments and supports for students with additional learning, wellbeing or adjustment needs.
We value the partnerships we develop with families and recognise that working together is essential to ensuring every student is supported to experience success at school.
Book Week is always one of the most anticipated events on the Mirniyan calendar!
Students participated in a Book Week Dress-Up Day, coming to school dressed as a favourite book character and we loved seeing so many families at our Book Week parade at assembly.
We also enjoyed a whole-school Books to Life Incursion, featuring Being Indy by Zoe Gaetjens and Estee Sarsfield. Being Indy was a performance bringing a picture story book to life-exploring belonging, inclusion, individuality, courage, acceptance and standing up for what is right. These themes connect strongly with our school values of Respect, Care and Growth. We loved the opportunity to celebrate the joy of books, reading and storytelling together!
